Recommended Driving Knowledge & Skills to Pass Your Drive Test
These are just some of the skills and knowledge a learner should have cemented over the 2yr period of learning to drive, prior to their drive test so it keeps them much safer on the road once they pass their drive test and are driving solo (no one next to them to say, “Look out.”).
Drivers must realise they are driving a lethal weapon that they can kill with or be killed, and should accept the responsibility of learning how to drive safely prior to driving solo.
Seat Position - Knowing how to set up your seat to control the pedals and for safety in the event of an accident?
Mirrors - What points to look for when setting up interior and exterior mirrors?
Seat Belts - There are several adjustments you can make for a comfortable and secure fit of the seat belt to protect you if involved in an accident?
Cabin Controls/Pre-Drive - How to use the de-misters, high beam, windscreen washers, hazard lights etc? It’s a drive test fail if you don’t.
Steering Hand Position - Is push-pull steering still a test requirement? Is hand position still the same since air bags have been installed in cars?
Gears - Looking at the gear stick and taking your eyes off the road! There’s an easy way of knowing which gear you’re in without looking.
Accelerator, Brake, Clutch - Is there a need to match the revs when engaging the clutch while changing gears? Clutch replacement is expensive!
Starting/Stopping Vehicle - Does the car need to be in neutral to start it or turn it off?
Moving to & from the kerb - What safety measures are required when pulling in and out of the kerb? Are we parked in the gutter or on the road?
Handbrake - Is a handbrake start still part of the drive test, or can we use the clutch friction point instead?
Mirror & Observation Behind - There is a definite indicator when looking in the interior mirror which tells you if a car in another lane is a safe distance from you to safely change lanes.
Right & Left Turns - Knowing where to position your car for turns so you don’t black other vehicles trying to turn in the other direction?
Clearance & Safety Margin - It is extremely dangerous to stick too close to the right side of your lane rather than in the middle. Good chance of a sideswipe or head-on of an oncoming vehicle doing the same. Are you scared of hitting the gutter?
Gear Selection - How to work out which gear to go to and when. Also, what tells you when to change gears without looking at the rev counter?
Speed Limit & compliance - What’s the usual position of speed signs you are looking for when turning into a road? Do you constantly miss them and not know what the speed limit is?
Road Signs - Recognising road signs as far ahead as possible gives you a good warning of what to prepare for. Could be a sharp bend, road humps, lane merge, no right turn, school zone etc.
Road Law - If second guessing who has right of way on the road because laws do change, check out the road rules in the ‘Road To Solo’ handbook.
Forward Planning - Don’t watch the cars just in front of you. Do watch them but also keep looking 1 or 2 kilometres up the road? Driving is so much safer if working out what’s happening early so you can prepare early.
Night time driving - Great indicators to help you identify where the road goes in the country at night and also city driving.
Reverse Park - There is a simple formula for reverse parking that will get you into very tight spots, works every time.
3 Point Turns - There are two types of 3 point turns, gutter or driveway.
Gap Selection - An easy indicator for keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in front, no matter what speed you are doing.
Scanning/Peripheral Vision - How to look for movement, whether it’s pedestrians or vehicles for early detection and risk aversion.
Safety Margin - How to work out when turning onto a road and vehicles are approaching, whether there is time to go or not. You cannot interfere with other vehicles or pedestrians when driving as dangerous and you will fail your test.
Turning Left or Right at Traffic Lights - Slip lanes and giving way to pedestrians, particularly when turning into or out of a street.
Position in marked & unmarked lanes - If your side of the road is wide enough for two vehicles side by side, where do you drive?
Lane Changing & Turns - What is the sequence we must follow prior to a lane change or turn?
City Driving & Hook Turns - How to perform a hook turn and why they exist.
Freeway Driving - How to enter & exit Freeways so we merge with traffic etc.
Angle Park - Are we allowed to reverse into them, can we reverse onto the opposite side of the road?
Shopping Centre parking - Do we know how to turn into parking bays and finishing in the middle of the bay without cutting the corner?
Hill Starts - Can we do a hill start without moving, using either the clutch to hold the car or the handbrake?
Bike/Bus/Parking Lanes - Are we allowed to enter these lanes when turning left into a street?
Give way oncoming, narrow St - What do you have to do if you have to pull over to let an oncoming car through? Very common cause of test fail.
Centre of the road turns - Do we know what the different options we have when turning right onto a road with a traffic island in the middle?
Courts - Do you know there are two types of courts that require different actions when turning around?
My Drive Test is:
Just a reminder of what you will need for your drive test at VicRoads on Tuesday 2nd February 2021.
You will need your learners permit, completed log book of 120hrs, hazard perception test results & $110.30 cash/card to pay VicRoads for your 4yr Probationary Licence.
You may also have to pay VicRoads for the Drive Test if you didn't pay at the time of booking the test.
I'll pick you up at 1.30pm & we'll drive to the Mooroolbark VicRoads area, then do a 45min lesson, followed by the drive test at 3.15pm.
I will then drop you back at home after the drive test.
