🚗 KNOW THE ROAD RULES – DON’T FAIL YOUR DRIVE TEST!

KNOW THE ROAD RULES – DON’T FAIL YOUR DRIVE TEST!

Understanding Victoria’s road rules is essential to passing your drive test – and being a safe, confident driver. Can you answer the following?

Common Drive Test Questions

1. Three lanes of traffic — you’re in the left lane, another car is in the right lane, and you both indicate to enter the middle lane.
Who gives way?

2. Can you drive in a bike lane or bus lane when turning left?
If yes, how soon before the turn?

3. Are you allowed to cross a Single Continuous Dividing Line to overtake a cyclist?

4. You're on a road with no marked lanes, with two lanes of traffic moving in the same direction.
Do you need to indicate to change lanes?
When can you overtake on the left?

5. Do you need to give way to pedestrians when turning into or out of a street?

6. On multi-lane roads, must you keep out of the right lane unless overtaking?
Over what speed does this apply?

📘 VicRoads Drive Test Criteria Booklet (How to Pass Your Test)

VicRoads Drive Test Criteria Booklet

Click here to view the official booklet (for Driving Instructors)

Tip: The final two pages of the booklet provide a detailed breakdown of what’s assessed during the test.

Drive Test Overview

The test is divided into two stages:

Stage 1 – Basic Driving Skills

Duration: Approx. 10 minutes

Includes:

Reverse parallel parking

Three-point turn

At the end of Stage 1, you’ll be asked to pull over so the testing officer can total your score.

Stage 2 – Complex Traffic Conditions

Duration: Approx. 20 minutes

Tests your ability to drive safely in heavier traffic and more challenging environments.

Error Limits

You are allowed one critical error in Stage 1.

If you make no critical errors in Stage 1, you may still make up to two critical errors in Stage 2 and pass.

More than the allowed number of critical errors will result in a failed test.
