My Drive Test is:
Just a reminder of what you will need for your drive test at VicRoads on Tuesday 4th December 2030.
I’ve had some bad experiences where students haven’t paid after a test which unfortunately means I can’t do a license test unless paid at pickup or you have already paid with a package (Fee is $200 in Cash/BankCard - Visa or MasterCard only or a Bank Transfer Receipt).
You will also need your learners permit, hazard perception test results & $82.80 cash/card to pay VicRoads for your 3yr Probationary Licence.
You may also have to pay VicRoads for the Drive Test if you didn't pay at the time of booking the test.
I'll pick you up at 1.30pm & we'll drive to the Burwood East VicRoads area, then do a 45min lesson, followed by the drive test at 2.55pm.
I will then drop you back at home after the drive test.
Recommended Driving Knowledge & Skills to Pass Your Drive Test
These are just some of the skills and knowledge a learner should have cemented over the 2yr period of learning to drive, prior to their drive test so it keeps them much safer on the road once they pass their drive test and are driving solo (no one next to them to say, “Look out.”).
Drivers must realise they are driving a lethal weapon that they can kill with or be killed, and should accept the responsibility of learning how to drive safely prior to driving solo.
Seat Position - Knowing how to set up your seat to control the pedals and for safety in the event of an accident?
Mirrors - What points to look for when setting up interior and exterior mirrors?
Seat Belts - There are several adjustments you can make for a comfortable and secure fit of the seat belt to protect you if involved in an accident?
Cabin Controls/Pre-Drive - How to use the de-misters, high beam, windscreen washers, hazard lights etc? It’s a drive test fail if you don’t.
Steering Hand Position - Is push-pull steering still a test requirement? Is hand position still the same since air bags have been installed in cars?
Gears - Looking at the gear stick and taking your eyes off the road! There’s an easy way of knowing which gear you’re in without looking.
Accelerator, Brake, Clutch - Is there a need to match the revs when engaging the clutch while changing gears? Clutch replacement is expensive!
Starting/Stopping Vehicle - Does the car need to be in neutral to start it or turn it off?
Moving to & from the kerb - What safety measures are required when pulling in and out of the kerb? Are we parked in the gutter or on the road?
Handbrake - Is a handbrake start still part of the drive test, or can we use the clutch friction point instead?
Mirror & Observation Behind - There is a definite indicator when looking in the interior mirror which tells you if a car in another lane is a safe distance from you to safely change lanes.
Right & Left Turns - Knowing where to position your car for turns so you don’t black other vehicles trying to turn in the other direction?
Clearance & Safety Margin - It is extremely dangerous to stick too close to the right side of your lane rather than in the middle. Good chance of a sideswipe or head-on of an oncoming vehicle doing the same. Are you scared of hitting the gutter?
Gear Selection - How to work out which gear to go to and when. Also, what tells you when to change gears without looking at the rev counter?
Speed Limit & compliance - What’s the usual position of speed signs you are looking for when turning into a road? Do you constantly miss them and not know what the speed limit is?
Road Signs - Recognising road signs as far ahead as possible gives you a good warning of what to prepare for. Could be a sharp bend, road humps, lane merge, no right turn, school zone etc.
Road Law - If second guessing who has right of way on the road because laws do change, check out the road rules in the ‘Road To Solo’ handbook.
Forward Planning - Don’t watch the cars just in front of you. Do watch them but also keep looking 1 or 2 kilometres up the road? Driving is so much safer if working out what’s happening early so you can prepare early.
Night time driving - Great indicators to help you identify where the road goes in the country at night and also city driving.
Reverse Park - There is a simple formula for reverse parking that will get you into very tight spots, works every time.
3 Point Turns - There are two types of 3 point turns, gutter or driveway.
Gap Selection - An easy indicator for keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in front, no matter what speed you are doing.
Scanning/Peripheral Vision - How to look for movement, whether it’s pedestrians or vehicles for early detection and risk aversion.
Safety Margin - How to work out when turning onto a road and vehicles are approaching, whether there is time to go or not. You cannot interfere with other vehicles or pedestrians when driving as dangerous and you will fail your test.
Turning Left or Right at Traffic Lights - Slip lanes and giving way to pedestrians, particularly when turning into or out of a street.
Position in marked & unmarked lanes - If your side of the road is wide enough for two vehicles side by side, where do you drive?
Lane Changing & Turns - What is the sequence we must follow prior to a lane change or turn?
City Driving & Hook Turns - How to perform a hook turn and why they exist.
Freeway Driving - How to enter & exit Freeways so we merge with traffic etc.
Angle Park - Are we allowed to reverse into them, can we reverse onto the opposite side of the road?
Shopping Centre parking - Do we know how to turn into parking bays and finishing in the middle of the bay without cutting the corner?
Hill Starts - Can we do a hill start without moving, using either the clutch to hold the car or the handbrake?
Bike/Bus/Parking Lanes - Are we allowed to enter these lanes when turning left into a street?
Give way oncoming, narrow St - What do you have to do if you have to pull over to let an oncoming car through? Very common cause of test fail.
Centre of the road turns - Do we know what the different options we have when turning right onto a road with a traffic island in the middle?
Courts - Do you know there are two types of courts that require different actions when turning around?

How to Enter a Roundabout
How To Enter A Roundabout
We should approach a roundabout at a speed we can observe what the other traffic is doing in and also approaching the roundabout so we can assess whether or not we have to stop or can keep going. All vehicles in the roundabout have right of way.
We too often see vehicles stopping at roundabouts when there is no need to. The reason this happens generally is because the driver has not worked out whether he needs to stop or not prior to arriving at the roundabout.
This can cause an accident if the driver behind isn’t expecting the vehicle in front of him to stop, as there’s no reason to be stopping.
A simple method in doing this early is to do it in the following order.
CHECK ONCOMING VEHICLES: Before arriving at the roundabout, look for traffic approaching the roundabout from the opposite direction and if they are indicating to turn right, then you may have to give way to them if arriving at the roundabout at the same time as yourself. But if the oncoming vehicles are turning left or going straight ahead, then it has no effect on you entering the roundabout.CHECK TO THE RIGHT: Check to your right as you approach the roundabout and then again as you near the roundabout and in time to stop at the stop line if there is a vehicle approaching on your right or already entering the roundabout.CHECK TO THE LEFT: Once you know it is safe to enter the roundabout, then a quick look to the left incase a vehicle isn’t going to stop and give way to you, so you can stop to avoid an accident.
Remember, you must approach an intersection at a speed to be able to stop to avoid an accident. No matter who is in the right or wrong.
Which Lane to Finish In
Which Lane To Finish In?
If turning left or right, you can now finish in any lane as long as the road you are turning out of doesn’t have more than one turning lane.
eg…If you turn out of a single turning right lane, you can turn into the right, middle or left lane. It would make sense to finish in the left lane if you were going to turn left at the next street. Or if there were parked cars, then it would be best to finish in the right or middle lane.
A Safe Lane Change
A Safe Lane Change
The correct order of performing a safe lane change is as follows:
Check your mirrors first prior to indicating. If a vehicle in the lane you are intending to merge into is closing the gap then you shouldn’t be indicating as you don’t want to frighten them into thinking you are going to move into them. The only time we should indicate is if we can see the car in the other lane in our internal mirror and can see both its headlights, then it is at a safe distance from you and you can indicate or if the vehicle is next to you.By doing this the other driver you could see in your internal mirror will see your indicator in time to work out what your intentions are. For the driver who is next to you, he won’t be able to see your indicator at all and therefor won’t be effected.Once it is safe to indicate, then the indicator must be operating for a minimum of 3 seconds prior to moving (consider having the indicator operating long enough for other drivers to firstly pick up your indicator is on, and then to work out what you are going to do before they can work out what they are going to do). So give them plenty of notice. The next is a Head Check to ensure your blind spot is clear before you move into the other lane.A good little exercise to confirm where your blind spot is, is to park on the side of the road and watch an approaching vehicle in your right mirror and note when it disappears out of your mirror. You will notice it was right next to your rear right door, out of your peripheral vision and mirror. That’s why we can’t afford not to do a head check. If we make this lane changing process a habit, it will mean using this same habit for whenever we are turning left or right, pulling into or out of the kerb, turning around at the end of a court. It is the same process for whenever we are diverging or turning.
Giving Way To Pedestrians When Turning Left or Right
Giving Way To Pedestrians When Turning Left or Right
Too many drivers fail to to give way to pedestrians when turning at an intersection.
If you are turning left or right out of a street or into a street, you must give way to pedestrians.
Too often at T intersections we see drivers not stopping and continuing their turn without any consideration of the dangers.
A good rule is if you can’t see far enough up the road to the left and right prior to reaching the intersection, then always stop.
If you are too busy looking to the right without stopping at the T intersection, you may run over a pedestrian or child on a bike whom you should be stopping and giving way to. The car approaching on your left may be on the incorrect side of the road because of parked cars and have a head on collision.
Under these circumstances, if you kill a pedestrian or a motorist, you will be charged with Culpable Driving.
Is it worth the risk just to save a split second.
The law is you must approach an intersection at a speed that you can stop to avoid an accident.
Doesn’t matter who is in the right or wrong, we want to avoid injury and damage.
‘U’ Turn Must Give Way To Everything
‘U’ Turn Must Give Way
When doing a ‘U’ Turn, you must give way to all pedestrians and all vehicles.
You must give way to everything, even vehicles in a side street turning into the road you are already on or a vehicle turning left in slip lane into the road you are already on.
Keeping it simple, you must give way to everything!
Must give way to Pedestrians, Vehicle A and Oncoming Vehicles (Give way to everything)
Must give way to Pedestrians, Vehicles in Slip Lane turning left and Oncoming Vehicles (Give way to everything)
