VICROADS HANDOUT ON MOBILE PHONE USE WHEN DRIVING (Applies to L's, P's and Fully Licenced Drivers)

Portable Mobile Phone and Seatbelt Detection Camera's

Victoria rolls out mobile detection cameras across suburbs with $555 fines.

If you’re using a phone behind the wheel, the chance of getting caught is about to become a lot greater. This is when it begins.

Victorian motorists will start to notice new detection cameras popping up around the suburbs and they will very soon swing into action.

The mobile phone detection cameras take high-resolution images in all traffic and weather conditions to catch drivers illegally using their device.

They also detect if a motorist is not wearing their seatbelt.

The cameras are popping up around the state this month and will be operating, but drivers will not be fined for another three months.

There is instead an advisory period where drivers breaking the law will be sent a letter instead of receiving a fine or demerit points.

But once the fine does kick in, drivers will be slugged $555 and four demerit points if caught using their mobile phone in the car.

If the matter goes to court, the fine could be as much as $1849.

The incorrect wearing of a seatbelt is a $370 fine and three demerit points.

The cameras are a $33.7 million investment as a part of the Victorian Road Safety Strategy.

It is estimated they will prevent 95 casualty crashes each year.
